Rasta Imposta began in 1992 when Robert Berman created wool dreadlocks, attached them to a baseball cap, and sold it off his head for 20 dollars and a beer at a bar in Long Beach Island, NJ. It was during that summer that he met his wife, Tina, who purchased the first 12 dreadlock hats and sold them in her retail store, The Mod Hatter. The simple and funny hat quickly became a worldwide sensation.

Robert continued to design new styles of novelty hats, expanding Rasta Imposta to also include costumes to complete the looks. As the company grew, Tina and Robert's sister, Jodi, joined as partners. Their entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and attention to detail made them a powerful team.
